Beginning to Understand God p3

October 4, 2010

There is the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. All the same, equal dude. We have talked already about what the means, so let’s get right to it.

The Holy Spirit has a number of functions, but one that seems to me as most important. The Holy Spirits call to bring you to Christ is something that you don’t have anything to do with, but is an act of grace from God. Only when this call happens in one’s life will you be able to come to salvation. As sinners we aren’t looking for salvation, nor would we ever choose it if it was up to our “free will.” One can only come to know Christ through the work of the Holy Spirit calling a person through the Gospel. Martin Luther, the great theologian, said it marvelously here.

The Holy Spirits calling is the most important thing you can pray for yourself.

  • The Holy Spirit also enables believers to live the Christian life. He intercedes for us (Rom. 8:26-27).
  • He illuminates  and guides believers into all truth (John 16:13-14).
  • The Holy Spirit enables Christians to fight sin (Rom. 8:5-6).
  • The Spirit sanctifies us (1 Peter 1:2).
  • He gives us Christian assurance to know that we are children of God (Rom 8:15-16).

This will conclude our little series on understanding God. You can check parts 1 and 2 here.

Good stuff Ben. There is an easy way to remember the work of salvation in the Trinity; The Father APPOINTS individuals to salvation, the Son ACCOMPLISHES everything that those individuals need for salvation, and the Holy Spirit APPLIES those accomplishments to the individuals that the Father appointed. All start with the letter A.
