Why Velocity Exists

September 2, 2010

Last night I spent the majority of my sermon explaining why Velocity Student Ministry exists. I think sometimes it is easy to forget why we come together on Wednesday nights both from a leaders and students perspective. If you’re a leader or a student that attends Velocity this is what we covered. For my regular readers, I wouldn’t mind hearing your thoughts at the end. Our goal, mission and vision is this…

To Glorify God Through Lives Changed By the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

  1. To glorify God– We want to be God centered and in everything we do put God, His Son (Jesus Christ) and the Holy Spirit at the center. So here are a few things that go with that.
    1. Creation glorifies God
    2. Common Grace glorifies God
    3. You will glorify God by being an object of His wrath by being judged rightly or glorify Him through being an object of His mercy. You want the mercy.
  2. Through lives changed by the Gospel of Jesus Christ
    1. I want you to understand what God has done for you through Jesus Christ.
    2. I want you then to fall in love with the Gospel! (God being in control, sending His son to redeem you)
    3. If both understanding, and loving the Gospel has taken place, only then can life transformation happen.
      1. We won’t preach “Be a good person.”
      2. We will preach “Fall in love with Christ.”
      3. We want to see you understand the Gospel, love the Gospel, and change because of the Gospel.

Let me know if you have any questions or thoughts?

I hope my kids have a pastor like you pouring into them Ben! I’m reading an awesome book by Danny Silk from Bethel church in Reading, CA. It’s blowing my mind…one of the points made is that in the church we either learn to preserve our relationship with God through rules (a relationship with rules) or we protect our relationship with God through the choices we make. You’re right, it’s not about “do this and don’t do this” or “be a good person”…it’s about “why we do this and why we don’t do that” . It all flows from wanting to love and honor God’s heart and our relationship with Him.
    Amen brother!!

BTW this is only part of the sermon.

We read a lot of Eph. 1 and 2 as text, just so everyone knows… we do use the BIBLE at Velocity.
