Save Yourself and Others

August 26, 2010

This past summer Velocity (my youth group) worked through the book of James. It was great just to go through the book, verse by verse, section by section and see the growth that it produced in our students lives. We wrapped up James 2 weeks ago and so we have a few weeks in between James and starting a new series.

Last week we taught on what it means to worship. The point? You will either worship yourself (which will end) or worship Christ (which never ends).

This past Wednesday evening I preached 1 Timothy 4, Being a good servant of Christ. In this chapter Paul is encouraging Timothy, a younger brother/ leader in the Lord to pursue a number of things. Paul says at the end of the chapter that if you are able to do these things you will save yourself and others. I think any time the Bible says something that we should do that will help us and others live for Christ then we ought to pay attention.

Out of 1 Timothy 4 this is the list that Paul give Timothy. Do these things.

  • Train yourself in words of faith and doctrine.
  • Train yourself in godliness.
  • Strive to understand our hope in a living God.
  • Be an example of speech, conduct, love, faith, and purity.
  • Continually read scripture aloud.
  • Push others towards Christ.
  • Don’t neglect the spiritual gifts you’ve been given.
  • Keep a close watch on yourself and on your TEACHING.

1 Timothy 4:16

Persist in this, for by so doing you will save both yourself and your hearers.

First, i hafta say i really do like it when you do blog posts like this one, because it helps me remember what you’ve preached and i can come back to the lesson or Bible verses during my week.: ) Second, i have some questions: can anyone have a spiritual gift, how do you get one, and how do you know if you have one? Ive read about them in the Bible but a more in depth explanation on them would be nice too. Thanks and good work Ben, love ya!
