God is Merciful

March 4, 2010

In Velocity (our youth group) we are in the middle of a series that is talking about God and His nature. The first week I talked about the Sovereignty of God. We looked at Romans 9 and Ephesians 1 and how God is supreme, knows all and creates all. We talked about how God was before time and that He is currently standing outside of time while we are in time. The application to this was that seeing God as Sovereign let’s us go through life knowing He is in control, which should an ultimate comfort.

This past week we took a look at the mercy of God. One of the best ways to understand that God is merciful is to look at His son Jesus Christ and see that He is merciful. We are all sinner and fall short of God, but because of God’s great grace and mercy we are not condemned.

I taught out John 8 where a woman was pulled into the temple where Jesus was preaching. She was naked and had just been caught in the act of adultery. According to the law she was to be stoned to death. Gathered around her were the people ready to killer her for her sins, and Jesus kneels down, writes something in the dirt and then says to the crowd “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.”

The Bible says that one by one from oldest to youngest they walked away. There stood Jesus with the woman and says; “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” 11 She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more.”

Absolutely amazing. There was no question that she was guilty, everyone knew it and I am sure that she knew it. And in front of everyone Jesus shows that God is merciful. According to the law of the times she was due death, but according to Jesus she was shown mercy.

God’s nature is to show mercy. He is a merciful God. I am thankful that He is who He is and can give mercy to who He wants.
