Learning About Small Groups… P2

March 6, 2009

Let me start by defining what I am talking about when I say “small group.”

A small group is always gathered around a central theme. Whether it is based on politics or Jesus Christ, small groups gather around a central theme. People want to be a part of a group because of the theme or idea, or because they desire friendships with those who are already attending the group. You will not be a part of the group until you engage in one of those two things. Just attending and sitting in a circle with a group of people doesn’t mean you are in that small group community.

Communities are always gathered around a theme, an example of this would be when the pilgrims voyaged across the Atlantic to start fresh. They gathered together under one central theme of freedom.  In the same way people still gather in small groups around a central theme.

Your theme that you gather around can be anything. It could be based around a book, quilting, cake making, hot rods, religion or sports. Or you could just be a group of people that gather around the theme of being friends, but you are still gathered around a theme. You talk and discuss any different things, but your theme is the friendships that are being built.

Ever been a small group? What was the theme? Anyone have any unique themes?
