Church Planting

January 27, 2009

Last week I listened to Gerry Stoltzfoos (click here for his churches website) talk about church planting. He is a very captivating speaker/teacher. I loved the way he related to the crowd…there is something to be said about how the younger generation relates to someone who is transparent. Gerry was very transparent. He is a very smart leader and has  a great heart for church planting. After listening to him (along with a few other things) I think I would really like to plant. Just have to wait for the right time and place.

Here is some of what I got from Gerry…

  • Do your spiritual homework before you plant…that means pray!
  • Remember that family is first…1Tim 5:8. I hope this is true for your life.
  • As a vision matures, it is not always the same as it was in the beginning.
  • You can’t ask staff, volunteers, and church family to do something that you are not doing. This means if you are not bringing people to church…your staff, leaders, and congregation probably aren’t either. Ouch.
  • If you were given $100,000 dollars to impact a city, what would you spend the money on? Gerry’s answer…you guessed it, planting a church.
  • As a leader, learn to see raw talent in people.
  • Matt 28:18-20 Jesus said to make disciples, not get people to make decisions.(Ouch again) Meaning that the salvation decision is the beginning, not the end of the goal. We need to baptize people, (which means to give them a new self image) and then teach them ( meaning that there needs to be sustained growth).

Gerry blew my mind last week, I left feeling very inspired.

Amen. It was exciting to read that God may have planted a seed of planting in you! I hope that I am a part of your life long enough to watch that seed grow. Very exciting!

Yo Ben, dude….that is awesome to hear of your affection towards planting a church!!! If it is God’s plan, I promise you….HE WILL WORK IT OUT! I can say from experience from how God has taken our vision for the city of Pittsburgh, not knowing how it would ever happen, to watching God open doors and opportunities, and in 4 months we will be there! GOD is good and I can’t wait to see what happens in the future with this seed He has planted in you!

    Keep in Touch,

    Jack
