Christmas Classic…Predicts Future

December 26, 2008

I know that over the past few days you have been watching all the classic Christmas movies. From White Christmas to A Christmas Story, I am sure you have seen them all.images6

Sometime in the 1960’s Charles M. Schulz wrote A Charlie Brown Christmas, a story about a boy who finds the commercialization of Christmas sickening and decides to try to find the real meaning of Christmas. This is one my favorite all time Christmas classics.

This holiday season I was wondering if Mr. Schulz knew how culturally relevant his classic would be almost 50 years later.

Think about the characters… what are they really like?

I am pretty sure that Charlie Brown is depressed. We see that all over society today; it seems like so many people are on some sort of anti-depression medicine, or at least that’s what the commercials on TV tell us.

Then there is Pig Pen. I think he might be homeless. Or at least he looks and smells like a homeless person. American cities are lined with the homeless.

And then there is Lucy, who I think had a girlfriend and dabbles in mind reading. The gay rights movement has never been so powerful as it is today, and more and more people are going to see psychics.

And lastly there is Linus who clings to his blanket… he seems to have emotional issues, but also seems to be the only one in the story who understands the real meaning of Christmas. I guess he is like so many of us, who know the truth but still have our own struggles within.

I bet if we looked a little closer we could find more. Funny how something so old is still relevant today. I wonder if Mr. Schultz knew what he was on to…

I guess that’s why they call them classics. While most of the old shows deserved to go by the wayside, the classics remain because they tell truths which are relevant beyond the headlines of tabloids and the like. Thanks for such a nice post. It is refreshing in a world where all we read is how we are in a state of decay and corruption, to find a moment of peace if only for that moment. Peace, Jim
