Minor Book-Major Relevance

October 24, 2008

This week, I completed Old Testament Survey in the ministry school I attend. For years I had read the Minor Prophets and really never gave them much thought. To be honest, I now think that they are not preached on enough. The book of Amos is a phenomenal book! It speaks to some things that we are still dealing with in our culture today. Amos 5:10-13 talks about how the nation of Israel was not taking care of the poor and the weak; the prophet speaks to the social injustice of the day. We deal with the same type of issues in our world today. If you watch the news for even 5 minutes, you will see the corporate greed and our lack of taking care of those who are hurting. If you study the rest of the book, Israel never took care of the problem God put in front of them. I believe that God is putting problems of social injustice in front of us; the question is, what are we doing about it?

My thought is this: it’s trendy almost to become involved in a “cause” such as ending world hunger or to follow an individual as they use their celebrity to influence the world for the better. But so often we forget that we live in communities and neighborhoods full of social injustice. If you want to make an impact on your world, do it one life at a time… locally.
